Responder’s Second Bid After a 2/1
Your partner opened the bidding and you gave him a game-forcing 2/1 response. Now it is your second bid and you are responsible for placing the final contract. You have all the information (two bids from opener), so you decide.
If you have 3-card support for opener's major, now is the time to show it.
North:
♠ A 3 South North
♥ K J 4 1♥ 2♦
♦ K Q 9 8 6 2 NT 3♥
♣ 9 7 6
North, with only 3-card support for South’s hearts, had to bid a 2/1 first. Returning to South’s major shows 13+ points and exactly 3-card support.
If responder has a 6+ card suit, rebid it.
If Opener rebid 2 NT:
With no major support, try for 3 NT.
North:
♠ 3 2 South North
♥ A Q 6 1♠ 2♦
♦ A Q J 5 3 2 NT 3 NT
♣ 9 8 6
If you really hate notrump, rebid your 6+ card suit or show your second suit.
If Opener rebid his first suit:
Opener should have 6+ cards. With 2 cards in opener’s suit, you can support:
North:
♠ Q J 9 South North
♥ K 5 1♥ 2♦
♦ A Q 7 5 2 2♥ 3♥
♣ J 8 7
South's rebid of 2♥ shows 6+ hearts.
North:
♠ K 4 South North
♥ 9 2 1♥ 2♣
♦ K J 5 3♥ 4♥
♣ A J 7 5 4 3
South's jump in his first suit shows a solid suit.
